Frequently Asked Questions — Energy Grants Explained

The UK government funds a range of schemes to help households reduce energy bills and improve energy efficiency. Here is an up-to-date overview of the main schemes and how to access them.

About the Grants

For fully eligible households, yes — qualifying works are completely funded with no cost to you. Some households in partial eligibility tiers may contribute a portion of costs. We confirm this upfront before any works proceed.

Yes. ECO4 and the Warm Homes Plan are government policy delivered through Ofgem-regulated energy suppliers and approved contractors. EcoGrants is an independent eligibility service that helps people access these schemes.

No. These are grants, not loans. There is no repayment requirement.

No. Receiving an energy improvement grant does not affect benefit entitlements or tax liability.

Eligibility

Not always. While benefits-based eligibility is the most straightforward route, some schemes have income-based thresholds, and Local Authority Flex allows councils to refer households outside standard criteria. Our eligibility checker covers all routes.

Yes, in many cases. Private tenants can access ECO4 funding for improvements to their rented homes. The landlord's consent is typically required, and some landlords can access funding directly for qualifying properties.

No. Homeownership status (whether mortgaged, owned outright, or rented) does not directly affect ECO4 or Warm Homes eligibility. It is based on income, benefits, and property EPC rating.

Yes. Off-gas-grid properties may qualify for additional schemes including the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2). These often cover heat pump installation, insulation, and renewable energy.

The Process

Typically 6–10 weeks from eligibility check to completed installation. See our How It Works page for a full breakdown.

You may need an updated EPC as part of the grant process. We arrange this as part of the property survey — there is no additional cost to you.

All work is carried out by accredited contractors. For solar and heat pumps, MCS accreditation is required. For insulation, contractors must hold PAS 2030/2035 certification. We do not use unaccredited tradespeople.
